JUST IN: Why Sokoto deputy governor resigned

Sokoto State Deputy Governor Ahmed Aliyu resigned on Tuesday to save himself from imminent impeachments, it was learned.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) some months ago. But his deputy stayed back in the APC.

Ahmed is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

He is expected to contest against Tambuwal, who may fly the flag PDP ticket at the gubernatorial elections.

Daily Trust reported that a source close to Tambuwal said the deputy governor was not forced to resign.

The deputy governor was said to have submitted a copy of his resignation letter to the State House of Assembly but it was not read at the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary.

One of the lawmakers confirmed the receipt of the letter.

“It is good that he resigned honourably because he would save himself from unforeseen humiliation and also save his relationship with the governor,” he said.

The spokespersons of both and Ahmed were not ready for comment as of last night.
