The Senior Special Assistant to the President of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri Erewa has reiterated the importance of objective reporting ahead of the general elections scheduled for February and March, this year.
She said it is important for both online and traditional media to have self-regulation which according to her, enhances credibility.
Dabiri Erewa was speaking at the third annual conference of the Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) which took place in Abuja on Wednesday.
She said, “There has to be self-regulation in online and traditional media, which is why I recalled sponsoring a bill in parliament about media being self-regulated because for you to consider yourself a professional, fact checking is important.
“In the Nigeria’s situation, a news on social media even becomes a headline news on the traditional newspaper. So, self-regulation is important because we have to practice freedom with responsibility,” Dabiri added.
The former federal lawmaker also expressed government’s readiness to ensure that press freedom is upheld in all ramifications in order to take journalism to greater heights.
