Some suspected gang of armed robbers, who invaded a branch of First Bank in Mpape area of Abuja on Saturday are reportedly trapped in the bank after a failed operation.
The suspects gained entry into the bank after sporadic gunshots into the air to scare people away, but have been unable to leave following a siege by a team of Nigeria army and police who stormed the bank premises.
But shortly after forcing their way into the bank, a team of police and soldiers arrived the scene.
It was gathered the robbers have refused to come out of the bank since the security operatives surrounded the bank.
Various witnesses said some policemen and soldiers who were immediately deployed in the area have surrounded the bank premises.
The suspects were picked up after surrendering to the security operatives at the scene.
The federal capital territory (FCT) police command police later said they arrested four of the suspected robbers and killed another who tried to escape.
Bala Ciroma, FCT police commissioner, also told TheCable one of those arrested is an official of the bank.
Ciroma, who was on the ground at the scene, said the police are still investigating to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We have concluded the operation. Four suspects arrested and one dead. One of them is an insider but we are still investigating,” he told TheCable over the phone.
